Is Hertfordshire a City or County?

Hertfordshire is a county located in the East of England region, just north of London. It is primarily a statistical unit, but it is also home to the headquarters of Hertfordshire County Council and East Hertfordshire District Council, as well as McMullen's Brewery, which has been based in the city since 1827. Under the Local Government Act 1972, the municipality of Hertford was abolished and merged with other districts to become part of the East Hertfordshire district as of April 1st, 1974. The main offices of the Hertford Council Rural District are located in Wallfields, in a building known as Hall. The Hertford Cricket Club is an English amateur cricket club located in Hertford, the capital of the county. The Potters Bar area in the Hertsmere district is located outside the historic county of Hertfordshire and within the historic county of Middlesex. The headquarters of Hertfordshire County Council are located in County Hall, built in 1939 to replace Shire Hall. This building is a major employer in the city, along with Wallfields (East Hertfordshire District Council) and McMullens Brewery, one of the few independent family breweries in the United Kingdom before 1970. Hertfordshire is an important county in England that has a long history and many attractions.
